PLANTR: What is City to City, and what is your role there?
MR: CIty to City helps local leaders in cities start new churches. Our mission is to help leaders build gospel movements in cities. My role in particular relates to 3 areas: coach selected planters and network leaders from selected target city; oversee and manage the global programs that we design and deliver for leaders in city (training programs, new pilot programs, leadership programs, etc); help facilitate church planting in NYC through our NYC movement project which seeks to plant 70 new churches in the next 5 years.
PLANTR: Tell us a little about yourself.
MR: I spent my formative years in St Louis and was called to vocational ministry during college. After a few years in campus ministry went to Covenant Seminary, then helped plant a church in Columbus OH. I then journeyed overseas to Scotland to do another degree at Aberdeen University and then got married to my lovely wife Renee. We eventually served as missionaries in Manila Philippines were I lead a team of missionaries that facilitated church planting, developed residential centers in some of the churches for street kids, and taught at a Presbyterian Seminary. About 10 ago years we become restless about our role in Manila and decided not to return to that field for another term. Just as we moved from Manila, God provided a new opportunity for us to serve with CTC in NYC. We moved there over 9 years ago and are thankful that God opened the door for us to serve His church in this role. We have 2 boys who love sports, especially soccer.
PLANTR: What are you most passionate about?
MR: Helping leaders in their journey of creating new urban congregations and serving them through good coaching, training and friendships
PLANTR: What has been your most impactful ministry experience?
MR: Participating in and observing the growth of new churches in NYC from 2002-2008. It was a season of fruitfulness and excitement as leaders were called to the city.
PLANTR: What is a first step you would suggest for churches who want to begin to renew their city?
MR: Learn about and learn from the first city - the city made up of those outside the church who do not know Jesus. Learn about their defeators of the gospel, their needs, the idols that drive them behavior and aspirations.
